This has always been a question that seems to split fairly down the middle pro and con.

Me? Con. Reason being that while I do feel she did some decent work in the latter 70's, the damage she did to the early 70's overshadows that. The music the band was creating during that time (perhaps my personal favorite era) was absolutely stunning...and for me Donna had absolutely nothing to do with it. If you removed any other band member during that time the music would have fizzled. Take Donna out and you are only left with a few less moments of sheer terror as you anticipated her atonal caterwauling.

As for the whole equipment issue, that is a valid point. I have read that during the Wall of Sound years the band had no monitors to speak of and Donna had no chance of hearing herself. And, honestly speaking, even in her studio work, her vocals were never that strong so would have little to no chance of standing up to the tidal wave of sound coming from the speakers behind her.

On reflection, I guess my beef would not so much be with Donna as Jerry since he must have heard what spine crunching wails were coming out of her yet still kept her onstage. Did she have some particularly harmful photos of him? Was she needed for her ability to regulary snap the band out of particulary deep jams that otherwise would have gone on too long? Did Jerry also harbor a hatred of cats? Would love to have asked him about that.

It's a way of life: haters are going to hate.

Pro-Donna, Pro-Grateful Dead

You are right.

I do not like Donna.

Therefore:

I do not like the Grateful Dead.

Case closed.

What the hell am I doing here? Off to the Osmond Brothers forum.

Well, similar in that she's a little bit country, and he's a little bit rock n' roll.

There is never, never I say, any bad time for a Donny Osmond reference.

No time to hate, but the rest of the band did make a decision that Keith and Donna had to go. It was amicable, but it did happen:

Love the story of how they joined the band.
